We did a thing– and it’s big. We’re moving! We purchased a three flat building full of historic charm and vintage details in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago and we have big ideas and big big plans. Built in 1893, the building features a retail storefront and two residential units. The entire building will undergo a redesign, and of course each level will feature Semihandmade and BOXI products. We are most excited and proud that the ground level storefront will be the new expanded showroom for Semihandmade and Boxi cabinets.
What is a flat? It’s a multi-unit building in classic Chicago fashion. Historically, three flats are single-level Chicago bungalow style living with units stacked on top of one another. Three flats can also feature a ground-level retail store front on a busy commercial street.
Our Neighborhood
Wicker Park is a residential area with bustling day and night life. Our location on Ashland Avenue is only a couple of blocks from the North Avenue I-94 exit which makes for easy showroom visitation. Or hop on the Blueline “L” - that’s what we call our subway here in Chicago and exit at the Division stop and we are just a short walk away. Although we’ll miss our old neighborhood – Mayfair, we’re excited to establish ourselves as a brick and mortar design studio and Semihandmade/BOXI showroom close to downtown. We will be the go-to inspirational space for you to achieve your design goals.
Our Plans
The first floor will be an all encompassing design studio and Semihandmade/BOXI showroom. We are taking the design up a notch and will feature more BOXI cabinetry and of course our stunning Semihandmade/IKEA vignettes. The10-foot high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, vintage inspired lighting, and open concept will allow all of our beautiful designs to be illuminated! For our local clients our central location will make appointments easier to get to while you’re out and about. Or if you’re visiting Chicago, make a showroom visit part of your entire trip. You will find convenient street parking or a dedicated spot at the back of the building. We are busy making plans to open the new showroom on May 2nd, 2022. Below you will find some inspiration plans for the new space.
The second floor will be converted to an Airbnb unit featuring three bedrooms and two baths. There is currently an IKEA Akurum kitchen and thankfully Semihandmade still manufactures fronts for the old system, so the kitchen will get a stylish redesign for a nominal cost. The bathrooms will be refreshed with a new Semihandmade and Boxi vanity. The living room will feature a wall mounted media cabinet with Semihandmade walnut grain-matched fronts. The back entry will feature a Semihandmade mudroom andstorage cabinet. Our goal is to show our guests the limitless design possibilities of Semihandmade and BOXI for every room in the home. It will be a comfortable and eclectic space to stay while visiting Chicago.
The top floor will be the owner’s suite and will be remodeled top to bottom featuring the new Semihandmade DIY Quartline fronts in the kitchen, two bathrooms, master bedroom built-ins, library/media room and a built-in bar.
We have so much to do, but luckily our plans are moving at a good pace. First up, we will be refreshing the Airbnb. Follow along, we are so excited!
